  31. HOW TO INSTALL & UNINSTALL

  33. SETUP.EXE is a self-extracting executable containing the program
  34. files.
  35.  
  36. Run SETUP.EXE to install Eraser. The setup program will extract
  37. the files and copy them to a desired location. You can uninstall
  38. Eraser normally via Control Panel.

  40. Eraser requires MFC42.DLL and MSVCRT.DLL (you can download them
  41. at Eraser home page).

  45. Be sure to uninstall any previous version of Eraser before
  46. installing.

  49. DESCRIPTION
  50.  
  51. Eraser consists of several utilities built on top of a powerful
  52. file wiping library capable of securely removing sensitive data
  53. from your hard drive.
  54.  
  55. Three user interfaces are included û a standard wipe utility, a
  56. convenient Explorer shell extension and a scheduler which allows
  57. you to program the erasing of unused disk space or, for example,
  58. cache files to happen regularly, at night, during your lunch
  59. break, at weekends or whenever you like.

  61. By default files are overwritten several times with carefully
  62. selected patterns, based on Peter Gutmann's paper Secure
  63. Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory, which
  64. effectively remove the magnetic remnants from the hard disk
  65. making it impossible to recover the data.

  67. For faster (and less effective) file erasing, Eraser also
  68. supports a method defined in the National Industrial Security
  69. Program Operating Manual of the US Department of Defense.

  71. There is also an option to overwrite only with pseudo-random
  72. data.
